Board of Stewards Update: June 2022

Kitty Meyers, Board Chair

The June 2022 Board of Stewards meeting was held on Thursday, June 16. It opened with a prayer from Pastor Ryan Jacobson and the approval of the May minutes. Roger Lind, Foundation Board Chair, provided a report of the last meeting of the Foundation. He discussed the activities and recommendations from the board’s three committees. The Investment Team’s recommendations included the risk levels of several funds, ensuring the acceptability of risk with respect to the market. The Support Team discussed the revision of the Gift Acceptance Policy to raise the minimum amount to be accepted as a designated, restricted, endowed fund from $10,000 to $50,000.  The Board of Stewards approved this policy as part of the Finance Committee report. The Foundation board also accepted the recommendation of the Growth Team to offer the TMF Course, Getting Your House in Order, in the Fall of 2022.

Executive Director Valerie Slade presented the Finance Report. While the year-to-date Sunday cash receipts continue to double the projections, the projected gift collections for May fell short of expectations. Revenue was also greater than expected from oil and gas royalties and facility rentals. Overall, revenues fell short of budget for the month of May. The staff continues to manage the expenses closely. The May outcome resulted in a shortfall from projections. However, the financials show a surplus of $155,000 over projections for the year-to-date.

I was happy to announce that Pastor Jason Adams and his wife Kalenda have found a rental house and are in the process of getting settled. The board and staff are working with an onboarding facilitator appointed by Bishop Schnase to assist in introducing the Adamses to AHUMC. We are excited that Jason's first Sunday preaching will be on July 10. Those attending the Rio Texas Conference in McAllen were able to chat with him briefly as his attendance was shortened by the need to return home for the moving logistics.

Trustee Chair Carr Hornbuckle presented the Trustees report. The Asbury property sale is moving forward. The Board approved through a motion to add Pastor Robert Ortiz as a signer to the closing documents for the sale. Carr also updated the board on the processes for leasing the NE parking lot and the installation of the Basse Road sign.

David Kinder, SPRC Chair, provided an update on staff vacancies. We must first congratulate Stacy Smith on her return to full-time teaching. She will be leaving us at the start of the school year. The current open positions are Youth Ministry Director, Youth Ministry Associate Director and Music and Worship Associate Director. Valerie outlined the various resources being utilized to source candidates.

The meeting concluded with a prayer from Pastor Darrell Smith. The next board meeting will be on Thursday, August 18. Blessings for a safe and happy summer to all.
