Kathie Love, one of our wonderful volunteer team leaders, has served diligently at Fishing Under the Bridge for more than two decades. Read about her experiencing serving those in need:
I started volunteering with Fishing Under the Bridge 24 years ago when my daughter was going through confirmation at AHUMC.
At that time, with volunteers from the church, we would prepare a meal in the church's kitchen, transport the meal downtown along with tables and chairs in a trailer, and volunteers would help serve the meals to those experiencing houselessness under the Commerce Street Bridge. The confirmation class would occasionally help with serving meals under the Commerce Street Bridge.
We did this once a month, and I'm honored to have continued serving within this outreach ministry once a month for the past 24 years. We now partner this outreach ministry with the Haven for Hope in their kitchen on the 4th Sunday of each month.
This outreach ministry allows us to serve communities without permanent housing. Our volunteers experience fellowship with others serving from our church and the San Antonio community. Throughout the past 24 years, Fishing Under the Bridge has connected me with several people I'm happy to consider friends. I consistently enjoy hanging out and serving alongside them every 4th Sunday of each month in the kitchen. This allows us to catch up with everything going on in their family and lives while we are working around the tables preparing sandwiches and meals and serving meals.
There are always opportunities to volunteer with families and friends or come alone and make new friends at Fishing Under the Bridge. If you'd like to volunteer, contact Kathie Love here.
