CODE YOU is an organization that offers healthcare professionals holistic care as they face feelings of apathy, isolation, and compassion fatigue. This is one of the organizations that AHUMC is honored to highlight, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month. Read more below about the vital work CODE YOU does for nurses in our community.
We all remember early 2020 when the world stopped. It was a time of collective lament as we did our best to navigate a world of infinite unknowns and loss. By the summer of 2020, nurses (consistently rated the most trusted profession) suffered from compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is a profound emotional, physical, and spiritual erosion that occurs when caregivers cannot rest, refuel and regenerate. Many nurses began experiencing symptoms much like those of their traumatized patients.
As nurses and spiritual directors, CODE YOU Co-founders Phyllis Morton and Tamara Ramirez began to wonder how they could bring care for the hearts and souls of these nurses. So, in February 2021, they offered their first CODE YOU retreat virtually. Since then, the retreat has been accredited and offers nurses 5 CE hours, a place to rediscover the joy of community, and a plan to engage in soul care practices post-retreat. Since that time, hundreds of nurses have benefitted from the course.
This summer, CODE YOU will offer a new Wholistic Leadership course. It will equip and empower leaders to host local, in-person Code You experiences designed to unleash exponential impact on the heart and soul of nursing in the greater San Antonio area. Participants will learn holistic teaching methods focusing on soul and spiritual health, experiential practices that are practical and accessible (such as breath prayer, gratitude journaling, meditative hikes, and art-based healing), and education on nursing leadership. The 15 CE hours course curriculum includes training on spiritual care, compassion fatigue, healing self-care, trauma-informed care, workplace violence, Enneagram, communication and story-telling, and creating healing spaces.
