OUR STORY

AHUMC Foundation

INTRODUCTION

Almost 50 years ago, the AHUMC Foundation began its journey toward empowering the church and stewarding its potential.  While this timeline offers a brief overview of some of the Foundation’s milestones, we are nevertheless inspired to keep going by the changed and empowered lives these milestones represent.

THE 1970's

The story of the AHUMC Foundation began in 1977 in the wake of the energy crisis in the United States. Amid the resulting stagnant economy, members of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church cast a vision, determined to ensure the ability of the church to recover from financial crisis as well as answer the call to social and spiritual leadership.

1977

The people of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church chartered the Foundation on February 24, 1977, to “fulfill, supplement, and extend the ministry” of the church.  With a single contribution of $500, the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church Foundation began.

THE 1990's

In the 90’s, the AHUMC Foundation focused on planting seeds and fostering growth—a purpose that began with our founders and continues today.  One result of that growth was the 1995 move from Broadway to the newly constructed Basse Road Campus where AHUMC still resides.

2006 - 2020

Rev. Dr. Harold Burkhardt served as clergy representative to the Foundation from 2006 to 2020.  “Burky” worked tirelessly to build the foundation from $924,000 to over $6,100,000.  He helped to lead the Foundation through a season of phenomenal growth, including the largest gift the Foundation has ever received—a contribution of over two million dollars.

2020 - 2022

The Foundation was a crucial resource during the season of uncertainty unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The stability and presence of the Foundation not only allowed the church and Weekday School to retain staff and teachers but to respond to changing and developing needs of serving the community and sharing the gospel.

TODAY

The AHUMC Foundation is a vital resource to myriad ministries and initiatives of the United Methodist Church.  Beginning with our charter in 1977, our most life-giving times have consistently been the result of stepping forward boldly in faith and connection to others.  We were founded to be an instrument of divine love and grace, and that calling persists.  It continues to inform every decision we make.

We are grateful for our grounding in the story and love of God.

We are grateful for the long line of leaders who believed in the mission and role of the church.

We are grateful to partner with people of both remembrance and vision.
