The AHUMC Youth Ministry will join U.M. Army in the Rio Grande Valley for one of their mission trips this summer. U.M. Army is a student leadership organization that works to share the love of Christ through building relationships and meeting needs. During the trip, the youth will build wheelchair ramps and repair homes for economically challenged families in the area while making new friendships with each other and those they serve.
Last year, the youth participated in the U.M. Army trip in San Marcos, TX. AHUMC took seven people who helped build wheelchair ramps, replace decking and porches, work in food banks and clothes closets, and form relationships with other youth and leaders in the body of Christ.
While the youth work at the homes, they are encouraged to build relationships with the homeowners and the families they serve throughout the week. On Thursday evenings, those homeowners and families join the youth at the host church for a dinner to celebrate the new relationships they established.
Since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, U.M. Army has partnered with UMCOR to help in disaster areas in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and several states in the Northeastern United States. U.M. Army has served Texas since it started in Athens, Texas in 1978. This will be the AHUMC Youth Ministry's second time participating.
