From Tonya: I first attended AHUMC after graduating from Texas Tech University and moving to San Antonio the summer of 2000. I grew up in a traditional Methodist church. So when my boyfriend, now husband Dane, and I were visiting churches in the area I knew AHUMC was one of my top churches to visit.
Honestly I love nothing more than opening a hymnal on Sunday mornings and worshiping in the gorgeous sanctuary. It reminds me of my hometown church and instantly just felt like our church home!
Once Dane and I started our family, I knew Children’s Ministry would be a perfect place to get more involved in our church. So I began teaching Sunday School and enjoyed spending my mornings with all the precious children. Over the years I’ve become specifically passionate about our VBS program! I started volunteering for VBS when my 10 year old was a baby. It quickly became our favorite week of the summer.
I now have three kids and we all look forward to VBS week each year. I have taken on many different roles as a VBS volunteer so I’ve had a unique opportunity to really see how this special week touches so many people in countless ways. One of my favorite things about our VBS is children come from all different communities. There is something so powerful teaching 400 children about our Heavenly Father and watching their hearts turn to Him! If you want to see pure JOY, join us during a morning of VBS worship...it is incredible and cannot be beat!
I would tell anyone curious about AHUMC that I feel like AHUMC is a place where everyone is someone.
