March 1

How Can We be the Church

with Children?

8:30 a.m.: Doors open

Light refreshments will be served.

9 a.m.: Opening Worship

9:30 a.m.: Respecting and Joining the Child on the Journey

We’ll explore what it looks like to share the spiritual journey with children. We take the journey together in a particular time and place, recognizing that the grown-ups are not the only ones with insights to share.

10:30 a.m.: Break

Light refreshments will be served.

10:45 a.m.: The Child in the Midst: What Does Welcome Look Like?

We all want to feel welcomed. How do our beliefs about children shape our welcome of them? Can our efforts to welcome children actually keep them at a distance?

Noon: Lunch

Included with registration.

Optional Lunch Session:

Aligning from Cradle to Grave

AHUMC leadership will share their experience of

"de-siloing" each ministry in order to gather everyone around the same table and communally commit to a shared theology from cradle to grave.

1 p.m.: Worship

1:30 p.m.: Entering the Story Together: Trusting God’s Work in the Hearts of Children

How do we enter the story in a way that respects the children and respects the text? What does it look like to trust that God is present in the telling of the story?

March 2

What do you Wonder?

8:30 a.m.: Doors open

Light refreshments will be served.

9 a.m.: Opening Worship

9:30 a.m.: Childhood as a Time for Wonder

The capacity of children to imagine and wonder equips them to join and lead us into God’s story. How does this natural inclination to wonder inform and shape our practices?

10:30 a.m.: Break

Light refreshments will be served.

10:45 a.m.: “Wondering” Around in God’s Story Together

In this session we will explore together ways to tell the story that leave spaces open for wonder and for God to speak through God’s story.

Noon: Vocation of Play

Ryan Maloney said, “The vocation of childhood is play.” We also think that teams that play together, stay together. Connect with a new friend or gather your team to have lunch to debrief and go do something fun together the rest of the afternoon. We think this is so important we’ll even keep watching your children, if needed. Go be a bunch of big kids and play!

FAQ

"[Children] need to know God, not just know about God,

and in that knowing, trust God is at work in mysterious ways that cannot be explained.

Children need spiritual practices and spiritual language

which will give them hope, courage, gratitude and strength as they face life.”

-Suzetta Nutt
